William Henry Smith, 92, of Greensburg, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away at 6:41 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2017, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. William was born April 8, 1925, in Connellsville, a son of the late John F. and Margaret (Pople) Smith. He was married to Bessie Mae (Cowan) Smith, who passed away on Aug. 3, 2014. Bill was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He retired from Latrobe Steel in 1988 after working 30 years as a machinist. He graduated from Connellsville High School, Class of 1943, and was a faithful member of Alverton United Methodist Church, where he previously taught Sunday school. A veteran of the Navy, he served as an electrician's mate 3rd class during World War II and was awarded the European Theater, American Theater, Victory, and Asiatic Pacific medals. Bill was also an awarded race walking enthusiast. Bill will be sadly missed by his loving family, his two children, Linda Timko, and her husband, Terry, of North Huntingdon, and William Smith, and his wife, Barbara, of Greensburg; his four grandchildren, Todd and Renae King, Tara and John Beyrand, Brenda and Terry Gaona, and Kevin and Joy Smith; his 12 great-grandchildren, Cody and Dylan King, Kevin King, Ciara and Loreal Tabita, Phoenix, Abigail, Julia, Gavin, Liberty, Christian, and Jonah Smith; his three sisters, Gloria Jean Porter, and husband, Harry, of Connellsville, Maxine Resh, and husband, Pete, of Ligonier, and Dolores Paris, of Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his four sisters, Kathleen Cowan, Connie Lepre, Grace Danton, and Dorothy Mae Dahl; and his infant brother, Roger Smith. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, in the funeral home. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday, with Pastor Tom Shirer officiating. The Scottdale-Everson Honor Guard will bestow full military honors. Private interment will be in Alverton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alverton United Methodist Church or Salvation Army.
