William H. Mayers, 83, of Scottdale, passed away at 7:43 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, at his residence. Bill was born Jan. 4, 1935, in Blainesburg, Washington County, a son of the late Earl and Myrtle (Hasson) Mayers. He was married to Naomi Lorraine (Ludwig) Mayers, who passed away March 4, 2011. Bill was a devoted father and a retired educator with Southmoreland School District where he taught English, retiring in 1993. He also coached football and track and field. A graduate of Redstone High School, class of 1952, he received his B.A. degree in history from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1958, and later, his master's degree from Penn State University. Bill played football for both his high school and college teams. He was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Scottdale and enjoyed playing on the church dartball team. An avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he also was an outdoorsman, holding memberships with the NRA and both Perryopolis and East Huntingdon Sportsman's Clubs. He was active in the National Muzzleloaders Association from 1974-2014 and years ago served on the Southmoreland School Board. Bill will be sadly missed by his loving family: his two daughters, Linda Povlik and her husband Tim, of Dunbar Township, and Brenda Mayers, of Scottdale; his two brothers, Earl Mayers Jr., of Uniontown, and Dan Mayers, of Brownsville; many nieces and nephews; and his special puppy, Gus. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Orbash, on Oct. 26, 2017. Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of ROBERT B. Family and friends will be received from noon to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Additional viewing will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday in Trinity United Methodist Church, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. Monday with Pastor Harry Speakman officiating. Private interment will be in Green Ridge Memorial Park, Bullskin Township, next to his late wife. Appreciation is extended to Angela Bowling and Amedysis Hospice for their brief but excellent care.
