Obituary

Susan Elaine (Brown) Byerly, 67, of Export, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at her residence. Susan was born Jan. 22, 1950, in Scottdale, a daughter of the late James and Phyllis (Smouse) Brown. She married Regis L. Byerly April 24, 1982. Susan was a devoted wife, mother and sister. She was a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner with the VA Hospital, Pittsburgh. Susan also served as an associate professor of psychiatric mental health nursing at Carlow College and as a clinical instructor for the VA Medical Center at Duquesne University. She received her bachelor's degree in human development at Penn State University, an associate degree in nursing at CCAC, her RN and MSN in master's psychiatric mental nursing along with her MSN as a family nurse practitioner, both at the University of Pittsburgh. Susan was a member of Stephen's Ministry at the Community United Methodist Church in Harrison City where she was a two-term secretary of the Staff Parish Relations Committee and co-leader of the Discipline Bible Study. She held an ANCC certification and last year was the recipient of the Cameos of Caring Award. In 2016, the VAMC presented her with the Secretary's Award for Excellence in Nursing - RN Expanded Role Category, and from 2009 to 2010, she participated in Nursing led initiative to provide seamless transition for OEF/OIF veterans combating homelessness: Road to Hope: Transition from Battlefield to Home Front. Susan will be sadly missed by her loving family; her husband of 35 years, Regis L. Byerly; her two daughters, Rachel Byerly of Duluth, Minn., and Sarah Kobylinski and her husband, Peter, of South Park; her siblings, Mary-Ann Brown, of Belle Vernon, Catherine Brown, of Scottdale, Frank Brown, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Tom Brown, of Scottdale, and Karen Branthoover, of Scottdale.
Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale, (724-887-5300 / www.fergusonfunerals.com / GPS: N40 degrees 06.136, W79 degrees 35.278). Family and friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with Pastor John Ciampa officiating. Committal services and interment will follow in Mt. Royal Cemetery, Glenshaw.
