Roy C.
Myers
October 29, 1947 – July 17, 2025
Roy Clyde "Buss" Myers, 77 of Greensburg passed away at 8:30 pm Thursday, July 17, 2025 in Independence Health System's Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Roy was born on October 29, 1947 in Mount Pleasant, a son of the late Roy B. Myers Jr. and Ruth N. (Echard) Myers. He is survived by his beloved and cherished wife of 45 years, Mary Jane (Brubaker) Myers. His happiest day was June 28, 1980 when they were married, after being matched by a dating service (before the development of Internet dating). He is also survived by his sister, Dolores L. "Dolly" (Myers) Legas of Mount Pleasant; special friends Tina and Dennis Young and their children, Joshua, Hannah, and Abigail, all of Greensburg; and by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Brother-in-law, Andrew "Frank" Legas of Mount Pleasant.
Roy graduated from Southmoreland High School at Alverton (formerly East Huntingdon High School) in 1965, as part of the school's first graduating class. He then obtained a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969. Roy's first job was at his family's greenhouse business in Scottdale. After graduation from Pitt he worked briefly at H.J. Heinz in Pittsburgh and Chambersburg as a Laboratory Supervisor of the Quality Control Department. Following that, he began a long career in the field of Toxicology at the Bushy Run Research Center in Export. There, he conducted research on the health and safety effects from exposure to industrial and household chemicals, mostly for Union Carbide Corporation. He began his career by performing the technical work, but moved on to supervisory and managerial functions over the 25 years at Bushy Run. During that time, Roy earned certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology and authored or co-authored numerous published technical papers and several book chapters. He became a member of the American College of Toxicology and the National Society of Toxicology (SOT), serving the local Allegheny-Erie Regional Chapter of SOT as a Committee Chair and as President. After the lab closed, he was employed by Brown & Root Environmental in Greentree. There, he helped to conduct risk assessments of potential hazard waste sites to determine whether they required remediation. After two years, he was invited to return to Union Carbide, first as a consultant, and then as a Manager of the Risk Assessment Information Group at the Corporate Center in Danbury, CT. When Union Carbide merged with Dow Chemical, Roy and Jane decided they would accept the offered severance package and retire, returning to Greensburg.
The next phase of life for Roy and Jane was increased involvement with their church, Maplewood United Presbyterian Church. He served on several committees, especially involving church finance. For many years, he served as the Financial Secretary, responsible for handling all church income. He and Jane joined the choir for several holiday cantatas. They also participated in numerous church-sponsored mission trips, helping to rebuild homes damaged by hurricanes, floods, or other natural disasters. Their first trip was to Mississippi shortly after Hurricane Katrina had struck, followed by trips to LA, AL, IA, NJ, and Central PA. Roy and Jane enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and parts of Canada, the Caribbean (including cruises), Mexico, Central America, South America, and Europe. They also liked camping, hiking, biking, live theater, concerts, and reading. In addition, Roy enjoyed strumming his guitar, surfing the Internet, watching the Steelers, and assembling jigsaw puzzles. He and Jane supported numerous local and national charities, especially those related to environment, preservation, and health.
