Obituary

Richard Lee "Dick" Rowan Sr., 86, of Connellsville (Dunbar Township), passed away peacefully at 7:18 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2018, surrounded by his loving family at his home.

Dick was born May 10, 1931, in Vanderbilt, a son of the late William A. and Margaret (Thomas) Rowan.

He married Nancy Jo (Shallenberger) Rowan on Sept. 20, 1959.

Dick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a successful and highly respected salesman and businessman for 56 years. Dick was a faithful member of the Vanderbilt United Methodist Church for 58 years and served as a Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. He served on the Dunbar Township School Board in the 1960s and was part of the construction of Dunbar Township Elementary School. Dick was a longtime member of the Dunbar Township Lions Club and a member of the planning and zoning commission in the 1970s. Of his many accomplishments, his greatest was his family, whom he loved very much.

Dick will be sadly missed by his loving family; his wife of 58 years, Nancy Jo (Shallenberger) Rowan; his children, Richard L. Rowan Jr., Shawnee Olinzock, Lyn Hone, Michael Rowan and wife Rhonda, Cynthia Umbel, and Laurie Roadman and husband Jayme; and his grandchildren, Jeffrey Hone, Samantha Hone, Andrea Olinzock, Keith Olinzock, Emily Rowan, Eva Rowan, Lindsay Umbel, Joshua Umbel, Loryn Roadman, Hunter Roadman, Matthew Rowan, and Savannah Rowan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jamie Lin Rowan; his son-in-law, Arthur Hone; his sister, Virginia Guynn; his brother, John D. "Jack" Rowan; and his first wife, Garnet Mowry Rowan.

Family and friends will be received from 4-8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Additional viewing will be held from 10-11 a.m. Monday, the hour of service, in the Vanderbilt United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rob Rabenstein and the Rev. Dr. Marvin Watson co-officiating.

Chapel committal services and interment will follow in Dickerson Run Cemetery.

The family would like to express its appreciation to the staff of Excela Frick Hospital ICU for the wonderful care and support they were given throughout this difficult time.
