Richard “Rick” Vincent Martin, 81, of Connellsville (Dunbar Township), passed away peacefully at 11:57 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Mount Macrina Manor, North Union Township.

Rick was born May 2, 1945, in Vanderbilt, the son of the late William H. Jr. and Margaret Jane (Madden) Martin. He was married to his beloved wife, Linda Sue (Martinchalk) Martin, for 41 years, and she survives him.

Rick was a proud, protective, and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a gift for making friends wherever he went and loved nothing more than sharing a good story. If he didn’t know you, he would quickly figure out how he knew someone in your family or someone you knew—and before long, you felt like you had known Rick forever. His stories, his laughter, and his unforgettable personality will be cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Rick was a man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. No matter who you were or what you needed, Rick was there. He gave freely of his time, his knowledge, and his heart, never asking for anything in return. He lived his life as a servant to others and to the Lord, and his faith was reflected in the way he cared for the people around him.

Rick loved all animals, but he held a special place in his heart for his dogs and his “grand cats.” He had a natural way with animals and was affectionately known as the family’s “Dog Whisperer.” His love, patience, and gentle spirit extended to every animal he encountered, and his beloved pets were truly part of his family.

Rick was an avid outdoorsman who especially enjoyed hunting and spending time in the woods. He took great pride in mentoring young hunters and sharing his knowledge and love of the outdoors with the next generation. He was a member of Barton Hollow Hunting Club and Juniata Sportsman’s Club. Rick also enjoyed dancing, listening to music, and, most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

Rick was a member of the first graduating class of Geibel High School in 1964. He proudly served as a member of the United States National Guard. Throughout his working career, Rick was employed by U.S. Steel, Levin’s Furniture, and Anthony Crane. He later served as Vice President and Operator of Traft Construction and Crane Rental, where he worked until his retirement in 2005. Rick was especially proud of his 49 years as a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 66.

Rick was also a faithful member of Saint Aloysius Roman Catholic Church in Dunbar, where his faith was an important part of his life. He carried that faith with him every day, showing it through his kindness, generosity, willingness to help others, and devotion to his family.

Rick will be deeply missed by his loving family: his wife, Linda Sue (Martinchalk) Martin; his six children, Carissa, William “Billy,” Jane (Jeremy Bobish), Alicia (John Stitchick), Daniel, and Laura; his grandchildren, Whitney and Maggie; his sister, Pamela Tomasic; his special niece, Louann Mongell (Jimmy); numerous nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Karen Leighty and Tina Martin (Chuck); his brother-in-law, Robert “Bobby” Martinchalk (Lisa); and his loyal dog, Jess Lewis.

In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his sisters, Nora Doyle (Jerry) and Barbara Fudella (Robert); his brother, William Henry Martin; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Tomasic; and his father- and mother-in-law, Robert and Lois Martinchalk.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Krafty for many years of care, Dr. Means and the WVU Hospice team for the exceptional care they provided to Rick, as well as to the staff at Mount Macrina Manor. A very special thank-you goes to his beloved “night shift girls”—Nurse Kayla, Dayna, Michaela, and Marney—for the kindness, compassion, and care they showed Rick. Their presence meant so much to him and to his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in memory of Rick Martin to the Alzheimer’s Association, Fayette Friends of Animals, or The Learning Lamp, Connellsville.

Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of Ralph Galley Funeral Home, 501 Railroad Street, Dawson (www.fergusonfunerals.com). Family and friends will be received from 2:00–8:00 p.m. Thursday and from 8:15–9:15 a.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel, where Parting Prayers will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Saint Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Dunbar, with Rev. Father Peter Guardiano as celebrant. Graveside committal service and interment will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Rick leaves behind a lifetime of memories, stories, laughter, kindness, and love. He made an impression on everyone he met, always had a helping hand to offer, and brought joy to both people and animals alike. His family and friends will carry his memory with them always.
