Obituary

Michael D. Pizzola, 67 of Scottdale

(East Huntingdon Township) passed away at 6 pm Saturday, January 18, 2025 at his residence with his loving family at his side. Michael was born April 16, 1957 in Connellsville, a son of the late Michael N. and Anna M. (DeSantis) Pizzola. He married Laura A. (Gardner) Pizzola on June 4, 1983.


Michael was devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He graduated from Southmoreland High School, Class of 1975 and with a degree in social work from Penn State University. Michael earned his Masters Degree in social work from West Virginia University prior to a 40 year career as a Case Manager Social Worker with Independence Health System's Frick and Westmoreland Hospitals. He was a lifelong and faithful member of the Partner Parish of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Scottdale and a member of the Father Lambing Knights of Columbus. Michael enjoyed serving as a softball coach with the Greater Scottdale Girls Softball League and as a Board member of the Regional Family YMCA of the Laurel Highlands. He was an avid bird watcher and fan of Penn State Football, Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins.  Michael took pleasure in traveling to the islands of Bermuda, St. Martin, and Aruba along with visits to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, and the Grand Tetons. He also wished a special Thanks to his "1st Weekend in February Friends" who will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary Year in a few weeks. Michael's message to them, "So sorry I didn't make it but will be there in spirit. You have been a great group of friends!"


Michael will be sadly missed by his loving family; his wife of 41 years, Laura A. (Gardner) Pizzola; his two daughters, Katy Pizzola and her husband Robert Hunt and Nicole Hurst and her husband Chad , all of Scottdale; his grandson Jack Michael Hurst; his sister, Kathryn Schmitt and her husband Michael of Greensburg; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.


Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 SPRING STREET, SCOTTDALE (www.fergusonfunerals.com). Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 2-8 PM and Thursday from 9:30-10:30 AM, the hour of Parting Prayers in the funeral home chapel. Funeral Mass will follow Thursday at 11 AM in The Partner Parish of Saint John the Baptist Church, Scottdale. Graveside committal service and interment will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Regional Family YMCA of the Laurel Highlands @ www.ymcalh.org.
