Mabel Newcomer, 93, of Hornertown Road, Scottdale, passed away, Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at her residence. Mabel was born Feb. 4, 1922, the daughter of the late Rock and Fannie (Melton) Riley. Mabel was a member of the Calvin United Presbyterian Church of Scottdale, where she taught Sunday school. She was a stay-at-home mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who loved to cook, bake and can. She baked the family Christmas cookies every year. Mabel also enjoyed gardening and caring for her immaculate yard, which she mowed every week herself. However, her greatest joy was family. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Howard E. Newcomer, who passed away Dec. 27, 1994. She was the sister of the late Louis Riley and the late Maude (Riley) Thomas Minor. Mabel is survived by her loving family; her two daughters, Joanne Grippo, of Scottdale, and Patty Schwartz and her husband, Larry, of Scottdale; as well as her two sons, David Newcomer and his wife, Judy, of Sunbury, and Richard Newcomer, of Mauertown, Va. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, as well as Ruth Caldwell, of Scottdale, her sister-in-law and dear friend.
