Leroy V. Sherman, 89, of Scottdale, passed away at 2:27 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, in Amber House, Mt. Pleasant. Leroy was born Nov. 13, 1932, in Smithton, a son of the late Jesse V. and Mary Ann (Fisher) Sherman, who passed away May 14, 2005, and Jan. 13, 1991, respectively. Leroy married Frances A. (Myers) Sherman July 5, 1953. Leroy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He graduated from East Huntingdon High School, Class of 1951. A veteran of the US Army, he served during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. In 1953, he was sent to Nevada to take part in the Atomic Bomb test. He was employed as a piler with US Steel's Homestead Works for 36 years. Leroy was a longtime and faithful member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Scottdale, where he played on the dartball team. He was a member of the Scottdale American Legion, the Scottdale VFW Post, Scottdale Elks Lodge No. 777, the East Huntingdon Sportsman's Association and the Westmoreland-Allegheny Hunt Club. Leroy was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed music and the time spent at the Brownfield Community Center and Old Time Fiddlers performances at the Fayette County fairgrounds. Leroy will be sadly missed by his loving family: his wife of 69 years, Frances A. (Myers) Sherman; his three daughters, Brenda L. Suter and husband, Terry, of Scottdale, Rhonda E. Sherman, of Scottdale, and Sandra L. Wells and husband, Tom, of Bethel Park; his six grandchildren, Kara Suter Crouser (Tom O'Brotto), Kraig Suter (Caitlin), Lauren Noll (Logan), Brock Grabiak (Allie Rhoads), Jonathan Wells (Danielle Gibson) and Megan Gigliotti (Enrico); his six great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas and Ava Crouser and their father, Robert Crouser, Kinley and Jenna Suter and Gianna Gigliotti; his three sisters, Eleanor Cline and husband, Marvin, of Ohio, Mary Ellen Fitzgerald and husband, Jim, of California, and Linda Gonzales, of California; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Thelma Smalley (1965). Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale,( www.fergusonfunerals.com ). Family and friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and noon to 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Kevin Anderson officiating. Graveside committal service and interment will be in Scottdale Cemetery with full military honors bestowed by the Scottdale-Everson Honor Guard.
