Laura Ann King, 95, of Scottdale, died peacefully at 6 p.m. Jan. 3, 2019, at the Scottdale Rehabilitation Manor. She was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Boise, Idaho, to Jacob B. and Laura Elizabeth Shenk.She lived her early childhood years in Cheraw, Colo., on a small farm. She attended Hesston College, Hesston, Kan., for one year and taught elementary school for one year before marrying Kenneth King on April 25, 1942. Laura Ann and Kenneth lived in Hesston, where Kenneth worked as the Director of Physical Plant and assistant business manager at Hesston College for 20 years.While in Hesston, Laura Ann worked part time as assistant to the librarian at Hesston College. They moved to Laurelville Mennonite Church Center in 1964 and were there for two years as camp directors. In 1966, they moved to Goshen, Ind., where Kenneth served Goshen College as Director of Physical Plant until his retirement in 1991. During their Goshen years, Laura Ann worked as a hospital ward clerk at Goshen General Hospital.
In 2001, Kenneth died, and Laura Ann remained in Goshen, living at Greencroft Retirement Center until 2008, when she moved to Woodcrest in Scottdale to be nearer to her daughter, Janice Brubacher. At the time of her death, Laura Ann was a member of the Scottdale Mennonite Church. Her hobbies were cooking, crocheting, reading and rug-hooking. Kenneth and Laura Ann made more than 200 rug-hooked pieces. She loved to entertain family and friends for meals. She was a great hostess and had the gift of hospitality.
Preceding her in death is her husband, Kenneth King on July 4, 2001; and one grandchild, Kevin Brubacher on Nov.5, 1970. Surviving are her daughter, Janice (Maynard) Brubacher of Scottdale; two grandchildren, Steven Brubacher of Connellsville and Rachel (Mike) Weaver of Harrisonburg, Va.; and six great grandchildren, Derek, Aran, and Devin Brubacher, and Julie, Jenna, and Jameson Weaver. Also surviving are two sisters, Doris Hjelmstad of Golden, Colo., and Ruth Amstutz of Dalton, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Betty Shenk of Lancaster; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Scottdale Mennonite Church, 801 Market St., Scottdale, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 4 p.m. at the church. There will be a meal following the service. Private burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery in Goshen, Ind., at a later date. Memorials can be given to Goshen College.
