Obituary

Karl E. Burkhart Sr., 93, of Dawson (Lower Tyrone Township), passed away at 8:22 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, at his residence. Karl was born Nov. 22, 1929, in Scottdale, a son of the late Lawrence M. and Doris M. (Schultz) Burkhart. Karl married Mary E. (Herrington) Burkhart April 4, 1948. Karl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was owner and proprietor of Burkhart's Body Shop for more than three decades and was a lifelong and faithful member of the Jacobs Creek United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee. A graduate of East Huntingdon High School, Class of 1947, Karl was a standout football player and was active with the Future Farmers of America program. He also retired from U.S. Steel's Irvin Works Division, where he was employed for many years. Karl's memberships included a 33rd Degree Mason with the Marion Lodge No. 562, Hillbilly Clan 53; a charter member of the Bullskin Township Lions Club, where he served as past president (1998-1999); and past exalted ruler of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 777 in Scottdale. He was recognized and awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow along with the Scottdale's Friendly Ambassador in 1985. Karl took pleasure in assisting the Salvation Army each holiday season by ringing at the Red Kettle and he also enjoyed going on bus trips and NASCAR racing! Karl will be sadly missed by his loving family; his wife of 75 years, Mary E. (Herrington) Burkhart; his three sons, Karl Burkhart Jr. and wife, Melanie (Patterson), of Florida, David Burkhart and wife, Patricia (Patton), of Dawson, and Timothy Burkhart and Michele (Wengryn), of Greensburg; his grandchildren, Jennifer Morrow (Justin), Jaime Martin (Geof), Sarah Plant (Christopher), Andrew Burkhart, Nicolas Burkhart and Rachel Burkhart; his great-grandchildren, Justin Morrow (Addison), Joel Morrow, Rebekah, Samuel and Alma Plant, and Grayson Martin; his great-great-grandsons, Jaxen and Aycen Morrow; his sisters, Marjorie Jones Herrington, of Scottdale, and Patricia Baird, of Mineral Ridge, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James, William and Ronald Burkhart; and his sisters, Audrey Herrington and Dorothy Younkin. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday the funeral home chapel. Additional viewing will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mount Olive Evangelical Church, Route 982, Connellsville, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastors Lee Maley and Brian Swan co-officiating.
