Obituary

Joyce Werges Marsh, 62, of Scottdale, PA, passed away Friday, September 18, 2020, at UPMC's Family Hospice Center in Pittsburgh, PA. She was born April 11, 1958 in the Chicagolandarea to Elaine (Simos) Werges, Chicago, and the late, Richard Werges (Dolly), Plainfield, IL. Joyce is survived by her husband of 34 years, Roger Marsh, of Scottdale, PA; daughter LaineMarsh (Luis Rodriguez) and grandson Leo of Santa Rosa, CA; mother Elaine Werges, Chicago; sister Diane (Gordon, late) Kois and children Maggie (Mike Butler), Eddie and Katie Kois, Oak Lawn, IL; friend, caregiver and SFAM Michele Hulsizer; Mother-in-law Mary Marsh, Brother-in-laws William (Brenda) Marsh, Richard (Mary Lou) Marsh, Robert (Bev) Marsh; sister-in-laws Kathleen Marsh, Mary (Doug) Jaffe, and Lolly Extract (Stephen Lotts); many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and abundance of friends, co-workers and neighbors. Joyce dealt bravely with brain tumor issues since 1994. She gradually succumbed to mounting problems after many years of strength and grit that kept her alive through the worst medical issues. Joyce never once in 26 years complained about her condition. Twice doctors said she'd die within 72 hours – and both times she sprinted back to work in six months. As a couple, they bravely adopted her health issues and adapted their lives. The decision was made to smile and get the job done. Roger was a work-at-home spouse with many devoted at-home nurses and caregivers – especially angel Michele who managed Joyce's home care program. Great doctors, nurses, and related medical assistants who kindly and lovingly guided them along. Prior to getting sick, she loved work as a roll-up-your-sleeves journalist who thrived tracking news and publishing timely in the Chicago metro area. Joyce's special interest was politics. She was a devoted political consultant in various roles for the Chicago Democratic Party. And finally Special Assistant to Cook County Clerk David Orr. A thrilling position at Chicago's raw center – where Joyce flourished. Judges and candidates in and out of their home constantly. Dinner with the Obama's. And she still managed a book on The New York Times bestseller list – Ross Perot: What Does He Stand For? Joyce was not a woman to sit still. She devoted evenings and weekends to help political or non-profit organizations – especially devoted to Chicago's Haitian community fundraising to help Haiti rebuilding efforts. Somehow Joyce managed to raise their daughter Laine and sponsor other children in their home. Joyce and Roger successfully formed a low-key Chicago program to locate corporate donors to donate computers for teens that never had a computer in the home before. Her community efforts are too many to count. There are ambulances in Haiti due to her efforts. Joyce's health never got in the way of their home and relationship being positive and loving to the end. The last few days in hospice care were filled with fun group video calls, singing, reading, hugging and kissing. One old friend from grade school even called to reveal a lifelong secret they shared from a history class together. At their wedding reception Joyce was asked where they'd end up someday. She said on video, "Walnut Grove," a reference to the town where the books and television series took place. Their final home of nearly 11 years is on the corner of Walnut Avenue at Grove Street, which they quickly named – Walnut Grove. Joyce's smile told its own story. In those final eyes, you could see that she was sad to leave, but blustering with a child's curiosity about using her soul to mend broken parts and explore the larger universe healed. A Chicago and a Scottdale memorial will be held at dates to be announced.
