Joan C. (Smith) Bienia, 87 of Scottdale (East Huntingdon Township) passed away at 11:11 AM Thursday, February 2, 2023 in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Joan was born June 3, 1935 in Upper Tyrone Township (Fayette County), a daughter of the late Harry Melvin and Hazel O. (Huff) Smith. She was married to Sam J. Chiarello, who passed away on February 21, 1994.
Joan was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and was employed for many years at the Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. Formerly, Joan worked at the Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg and in recent years, served as a Food Demonstrator for Sam's Club in Greensburg, fulfilling her love of cooking. She was a longtime and faithful member of Pennsville Baptist Church and enjoyed playing cards!
Joan will be sadly missed by her loving family; her three children, Gary Bienia of Acme, Randy Bienia and wife Jena of Monterey, TN, and Lisa Leon and husband Fernando of Sedona, AZ; her five grandchildren, Hallie (Bienia) Brodak and husband Edward, Tanya (Bienia) Barras and husband John, Randy Scott Bienia and wife Krista, Levi Leon and wife Mariana (Marquez), and Abril Leon; her five great grandchildren, Christian, Andrew, Charlotte, Phoenix, and Maddy; her brother, Harry Melvin Smith Jr. and wife Judy of Scottdale; her sister-in-law, Barbara Smith of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kristi Bienia on December 11, 1993 and her brother, Richard Huff Smith on March 4, 2017.
Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 SPRING STREET, SCOTTDALE (www.fergusonfunerals.com). Family and friends will be received from 1-3 PM Sunday in Pennsville Baptist Church where funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday with Pastor Robert Bixel officiating. Final resting place will be in Scottdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Pennsville Baptist Church. Love Lasts Forever!
