Obituary

Ivan Richard Keim (Dick) age 88, of Scottdale, passed into his heavenly home on Dec. 14, 2020, from Walnut Ridge Memory Care in Hempfield Township, where he had recently resided.

Dick was born on Aug. 29, 1932, in East Huntingdon Township, to Ivan Rocita and Mary Katherine Szwed Keim. He began his love of newspapers as a carrier of the Connellsville Courier. He started working at the Mennonite Publishing House. He was head of the graphic arts department when he left in 1970 to manage that area at the Laurel Group Press for his cousin, Ralph Hernley. For many years, Dick also did freelance for the Connellsville Printing Company under Dick Carpinelli.

In 1986, he headed up the design department at L G Graphics in Wilkinsburg, thenatLKGraphicsinBelle Vernon. He retired from the printing business in 2000 after 10 years at Allegheny Bindery in Pittsburgh. He volunteered for Apprise at WCCC for several years and was part of the start-up committee for the local Faith in Action.

Dick grew up in the Scottdale Mennonite Church, where he served as usher. His grandfather, David Keim, was bishop of the Springs Mennonite Church. In 1969, he joined the Christ United Methodist Church in Scottdale, also later attending Pennsville Baptist Church. He was a 1950 graduate of Scottdale High School and took calligraphy courses at Carnegie Mellon.

Dick had a great love for cars and was a member of the Blue Ridge Mountain Sports Car Club, planning and running rallies and other social events which were enjoyed with many lifelong friends. He was also a member of the Antique Auto Club. He was known for his candy apple red MGA and later a number of Buick Opels. Dick enjoyed numismatics and was a charter member of the Southmoreland Coin Club. He also attended Apple Computer Club in Pittsburgh.

Dick married Janet Louise Leighty, the dental assistant for Dr. Wesley D. Beadling, and the love of his life, on June 24, 1961. They had a daughter, Susan Alane Keim, the joy of their lives, on Aug. 20, 1968. The three of them enjoyed many special times together, often with their Cairn Terrier, Cara.

Dick is survived by his wife, Janet; and daughter, Susie (Jay Detwiler) of Pittsburgh; brothers-in-law, Sam Redinger and Donald F. Leighty; nieces and nephews, Vicki (Rick) Clark, Tom (Colleen) Leighty, Ernie (Dawn) Leighty, Bonnie (Ron) Shaffer, Larry Leighty, Joe (Lou Ann) Leighty and their families, as well as many cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father in 1935; his mother in 2000; and his beloved sister, Shirley Mae Keim Redinger, in 2019. He was also predeceased by nephew, Shannon Redinger; and siblings-inlaw, Viola and Bill Brooks, Jim and Iva Leighty, and Erma Rose Leighty.
