Gertrude Joan Hixson, 87, of Scottdale (East Huntingdon Township), passed away at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in Independence Health System's Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Joan was born June 9, 1937, in Bridgeton, Mo., a daughter of the late Harry A. and Edith (Heidenrich) Stroud. She was married to Louis F. Hixson, who passed away on Jan. 16, 2019.

Joan was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful member of the Pennsville Independent Baptist Church and an active member of the 50+ Prayer Group. She graduated in 1955 from Pattonville High School in Missouri and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also took pleasure in sewing, painting, crafts, and doing yard work.

Joan will be sadly missed by her loving family, her three children, Terry Hixson of Mt. Pleasant, Christine Lewellen and husband James of Connellsville, and Janie Hawk and husband George of Scottdale; her nine grandchildren, Teresa Chiffons, Amanda Woy, Rick Irgang, Shaleigh Weir, Rachel Hollis, Samantha Villinger, Jill Myers, Jessica Askey, and Jenna Sibal; numerous great-grandchildren; her sister, Edith Schnaath of Wellsville, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Elizabeth Fancher and Harriett Williams; and her infant brother, Harry A. Stroud Jr.

Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 SPRING ST., SCOTTDALE (www.fergusonfunerals.com). Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with Pastor Robert Bixel officiating.
