George R. Hixon, 101, of Dawson, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015, in Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. George was born May 24, 1913, in Lower Tyrone Township, a son of the late William D. and Minnie (Nicolay) Hixon. He married the former Hazel C. McKnight on Nov. 25, 1939. George was a devoted husband and father. He was employed as postmaster at Dawson for 26 years, until his retirement on May 7, 1976. Years ago, he worked at the Old Overholt Distillery at Broadford and with the P and LE Railroad. A graduate of Dunbar Township High School, Class of 1932, George faithfully worshipped along with his wife, Hazel, at Christ United Methodist Church in Scottdale where he was the oldest member of the congregation. He was also active with the United Methodist Men, Married Couples Class and the Dartball Team. George was a dedicated 75-year member of the James Cochran Masonic Lodge of Perfection No. 614 where he served as past master and secretary. He was a member of the Westmoreland Forest Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Connellsville VFW Post No. 21, a 50-year member of the former Dawson Grange, the PA State Grange and a 20-year member of the Selective Service Board. Years ago, he worshipped at the Bryan United Methodist Church where he was lay leader, member of the Men's Class, Sunday school superintendent and was a member of the Salvation Army Service Unit. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army's Medical Corps as a staff sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the EAME Campaign Medal. George enjoyed gardening especially growing gladiolas, daffodils, strawberries and lima beans which he shared with his family and friends! George will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 75 years, Hazel C. (McKnight) Hixon; his daughter, Dr. Donna Hixon and her husband, Thomas Dawson, of Erie; his step-granddaughter, Dana Dawson, of Atlanta, and her daughter, Brooklyn; his step-grandson, Carmen Dawson and his companion, Ebony Britton, and their son, Carmen Dawson Jr.; his sister-in-law, Dora Ganoe, of Scottdale; his brother-in-law, Robert McKnight, of Connellsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Harry and Earl Hixon; and his two sisters, Clara Randolph and Cora Dull. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel, where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Dennis Henley officiating. Graveside committal service and interment will follow in Dickerson Run Cemetery with full military honors bestowed by the Scottdale-Everson Funeral Burial Detail. The James Cochran Masonic Lodge will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church. Love Lasts Forever!
