Obituary

Elizabeth K. "Betty" Shirer, 89, of Scottdale, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Betty was born Sept. 25, 1925, in Scottdale, a daughter of the late Albert Warren and Leona (James) Shirer. Betty was a retired biology teacher with Scottdale, Southmoreland School Systems and Penn State Fayette Campus for 35 years, retiring in 1988. She graduated from Scottdale High School, Class of 1943, received her Bachelor of Science from Allegheny College and her master's degree from WVU. Betty was a longtime and faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Scottdale, where she taught Sunday school for 50 years and was active in the youth and senior groups and the Hockey Bible Class. She was past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 317, a member of the Scottdale BPW, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Daughters of American Revolution, Braddock Trail Chapter and the former Monday Music Club. Years ago, Betty worked as secretary/treasurer with Scottdale Ozone Co. and also was active with the Delmont Band, Pink Hardy's Band and the Scottdale Concert Band as a saxophonist. She was cofounder of Showtime Theater in Scottdale and took enjoyment doing genealogy work. Betty will be sadly missed by her loving family; her sister, Sarah M. Schrecengost and her husband, Tom, of Summerfield, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Maureen Shirer, of Connellsville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Ann Shirer; her brother, Albert Warren Shirer Jr.; and her half brother, Robert Warren Shirer. Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating. Chapel committal service and interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park. The Order of Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Love Lasts Forever!
