Obituary

Donald W. Gilpin, 87 of Scottdale passed away at 4:42 PM Saturday, February 19, 2022 in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. Don was born May 21, 1934 in Connellsville, a son of the late Helen (Lape) Gilpin.

Don was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother. He graduated from Connellsville High School, Class of 1953 where he excelled in sports. He received a full scholarship to Clemson University where he played football and ran track. Following his service to his country in the US Army during peacetime, he continued his football career at Salem University, West Virginia. Don was retired from Southmoreland High School with 34 years service where he taught drafting, woodshop, history, and drivers education. His coaching career at Southmoreland from 1962-2016 involved football, track, and cross country where he coached all three granddaughters in cross country. He also was an avid biker, loved to ski and worked as a ski school instructor at Hidden Valley. Don enjoyed hunting and was a ardent sports fan. He was inducted into the Faywest Sports Hall of Fame and was recognized by Southmoreland School District for his 54 years of coaching that resulted in many State and WPIAL Champions.

Don will be sadly missed by his loving family; his two daughters, Kelly Tullio and husband Randall of Everson and Suzanne Brown and husband Richard of Scottdale and their mother, Eleanor (McKenna) Gilpin; his three grandchildren, Rikki Swink and husband Cyle, Sarah Brown and companion Scott Spychola, and Morgan Brown; his two sisters, Donna Geary and husband Tom of Jones Mills and Peggy Moon and husband David of Rochester, NY; and several nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother Jim Gilpin and his sister, Arlene Mascarelli.

Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 SPRING STREET, SCOTTDALE (www.fergusonfunerals.com). Family and friends will be received from 3-8 PM

Tuesday and 10-11 AM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel where funeral services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday with his brother-in-law, Joseph Grimm facilitating. The Scottdale-Everson Honor Guard will bestow full military hours prior to the funeral service. Chapel committal service and interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southmoreland athletic programs. Love Lasts Forever!
