Obituary

Carolyn Rae (Hollis) Shelkey, 89, of Scottdale, passed away at 8:09 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021 at her residence. Carolyn was born May 17, 1932, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late Raymond E. and Virginia Pearl (Montgomery) Hollis, who passed away in 1996 and 1988, respectively. She was married to Eugene E. "Geno" Shelkey, who passed away on March 21, 2008. Carolyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. She graduated from East Huntingdon High School, Class of 1950, and received a bachelor of science nursing degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She furthered her education at the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State, obtaining certification as a home and school visitor. Through the years, she was employed at the Women's Hospital of Pittsburgh, H.C. Frick Community Hospital, Connellsville State General Hospital, and at Southmoreland School District, where she served as a home and school visitor for 25 years. Carolyn was a faithful and active member of the Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, Scottdale, where she served as treasurer, deaconess and pianist. Years ago, she was an active member of First Baptist Church, Scottdale, serving as well in various capacities. She was a longtime member of Saturday Afternoon Club, Laurel Mountain Rug Hookers, Red Hat Society, Eastern Star, Scottdale Garden Club and several National Rug Hooking organizations. A community volunteer in later years, she devoted time to the American Red Cross, Scottdale Salvation Army and Association of Churches Food Bank. Carolyn enjoyed music, rug hooking, needle crafts, Old Fashion's and golfing at Mulberry Hill Golf Club and at Donegal Highlands Golf Course, where she was an active member of the "Don-E-Gals." She was especially known for her handcrafted nativity sets and referred to as the "Scrubbie Lady" at Scottdale Public Library where she donated over 3,000 scrubbies. Years ago, she was an accomplished horseback rider, enjoying parades and horse shows with her father. She owned and loved her pet Dobermans and beautiful white cats, several who will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge for her! "With God, all things are possible!" Carolyn will be sadly missed by her loving family, her son, Michael E. Shelkey and wife, Charlene, of Scottdale; her grandson, Michael E. Shelkey Jr. (Mamie), of Paris, Ill.; her great-grandchildren, Jacob, Eva and Emma Shelkey; her sister, Katherine Evans, of Milan, Ohio; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Hollis, of Scottdale; several nieces and a nephew; and her dear friend, Thomas Loetzbeier. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, B. Edward Hollis, in 2001. Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 SPRING ST., SCOTTDALE, PA ( 724-887-5300 , www.fergusonfunerals.com .) At Carolyn's request, arrangements will be private with committal services and interment at Scottdale Cemetery next to her late husband.
